EDUCATION: The FG has bitten off more than it can chew

All this while, we have not for once stop to think and ask ourselves, why have ASUU chosen to be so hard on the government? Why have they decided to be so adamant and not ready to negotiate with the federal government despite all the efforts that has been made by the government to remedy the issue of the ongoing strike? Why have they chosen to act emo
tionless and inconsiderate on this matter?

Come to think of it, we cannot say for sure that the striking lecturers enjoy it more by staying at home than being in their various offices. The fact is, ASUU has thought it wise that the best way to achieve what they are demanding for this time is by doing what they are doing right now, they feel that they have to be done with this issue once and for all, because it is not news that they have had previous experience of insincerity from the federal government and so this time they felt they cannot afford mistakes so they have to make sure the government do their bidding so as to prevent subsequent reocurrence of this kind of ordeal.

It is very clear that ASUU does not trust federal government on this issue. Despite the fact that the government have pledged to spend N200 billion on the universities in 2014 budget and the same amount for the next three to four years, in addition to the inital N100 billion already available for this year as a start. The government also did increased the installment fund of N30 billion naira earlier promised for the payment of earnd allowances to the striking lecturers to N40 billion and other incentives of over N40 million to be made available. But all these does not settle the initial agreement according to ASUU, so work is still a NO NO. Like a popular actor/musician Nkem Owoh sang in his song, "agreement is agreement," so why is the government now shying away from their responsibilities and failing to redeem their initial pledge.

ASUU has seen that the 2009 agreement that the federal government signed with them is their only leverage in this issue and so they have to ensure that the government fulfill that pact and not make them wait on promises which could eventually fail, because they feel those promises are not trust worthy, after all they know that the government is capable of granting their wish so why make them wait and punish the poor students who are always the ones at the loosing end.
